Curvature Elasticity Models of Microemulsions
نویسنده
چکیده
We review the theory of curvature elasticity of thin" fluid films starting with a phenomenological formalism motivated by microscopic, physical examples. The effects, of finite compressibility 'of the layer, exchange of molecules between the film and the solution, and the intrinsic bending stiffness of the film are taken into account· these degrees of freedom account for all the" important molecular modes of the system. The effects of fluctuation~ of t~e number of molecules in the film (which is in equilibrium with surfactant molecules or micelles in solution) ~d In the area per molecule about its equilibrium value is shown to soften the curvature elastic moduli. The rela~lOnshi~ o! t~e b~nding.moduli to the pressure distribution in the film is discusseq and it is'demonstrated that isotropIC liqUid films have no bending modulus, in the continuum limit. The bending moduli for charged membranes and for block copolymers are e~timated. Finally, some recent experimental measure of curvature elasticity are discussed and compared with the th~ory.

Bending Analysis of Carbon Nanotubes with Small Initial Curvature Embedded on an Elastic Medium Based on Nonlocal Elasticity and Galerkin Method
Carbon nanotubes have an important role in reinforcing nanocomposits. Many experimental observations have shown that in the most nanostructures such as nanocomposites, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are often characterized by a certain degree of waviness along their axial direction. In the present paper, the effects of initial curvature, influence of surrounding medium that is modeled as Winkler elast...
متن کاملTemperature dependence of the surfactant film bending elasticity in a bicontinuous sugar surfactant based microemulsion: a quasielastic scattering study.
Currently, the design of microemulsions is focussed on the formulation of environmentally compatible systems formed by non-harmful amphiphiles and oils. The use of sugar-based surfactants allows the design of microemulsions where, instead of the temperature, the addition of short- or medium-chain alcohols tunes the curvature of the amphiphilic interface. In this work, the resulting temperature ...
متن کاملSurface Tension and Surface Energy of Curved Interfaces and Membranes
In this work we develop the basic idea that the mechanical properties of a curved Gibbsian dividing surface are characterized, not only by the surface tension, but also by surface moments. It is shown that an additional surface bending moment term is to be introduced in the interfacial balance of the force moments at a spherical dividing surface. The existence of surface bending moment leads to...
متن کاملScaling Laws for Microemulsions Governed by Spontaneous Curvature
We introduce a model for microemulsions whose basic building blocks are cylindrical tubes connected by spherical junctions forming a network. The model predicts analytic scaling laws which quantitatively reproduce several prominent experimental features of the phase diagram, including the closed loops of 2-phase coexistence and the 3-phase body. The interfacial nature of our model, which takes ...
